Mattress Review for 2024

Updated on September 6, 2022

Buying a new mattress is rarely ever on someone’s mind—that is, of course, until you find it necessary to purchase a new one. A mattress is never one of those items at the forefront of the mind until your current mattress hinders your ability to sleep, causing you to wake up in the mornings with an aching back.

Usually, many years will have passed between your last mattress purchase and your current need for a new one. In my case, it was more than 15 years ago, before moving to Australia, that my husband and I purchased a then state-of-the-art memory foam mattress. My recent look at the market boggled my mind. I found so many choices available for a bed-in-a-box.

Going the route of ordering a boxed mattress again was a no-brainer. Between COVID-19 and the simplicity of the ordering process with our last bed, we decided to give it another go. Online mattress companies are even more customer-friendly now than they used to be. Almost all of them have 30+ day trial periods, 10-15 year warranties, and fast delivery to many Aussie metro areas.

Without much to lose, we started our research on which bed would be right for us. What mattress did we end up choosing? One of Australia’s best beds for back sleepers, the Ergoflex mattress.

Another plus in the Ergoflex column is that it is one of the oldest mattress-in-a-box companies and one of the few companies that have been around longer than the 10-year warranty it offers.

Before we knew it, my husband and I were the proud new owners of an Ergoflex 5G Memory Foam Mattress. It only took a day between our placing our order and the mattress arriving at our front door.

Without Further Ado, My Ergoflex Mattress Review

Before digging into how well we slept on our new mattress that first night and since then, let’s take a look at some of the features the Ergoflex 5G Memory Foam Mattress can boast. Our original memory foam mattress was just a block of memory foam with a slimmer, softer foam layer on top of that. Boxed beds have come a long way since the last time I had to worry about their composition, and I had a lot of catching up to do.

I had a lot of new technologies to learn about while researching new mattresses. Between different types of memory foams, latex, pocket coils, and more, more materials are used in boxed mattresses now than I could have imagined. I tend to be a bit of a geek when it comes to the tech details of things, so I hungrily ate up all this new information.

The Composition of the Ergoflex 5G Memory Foam Mattress

The Ergoflex 5G contains five different layers that comprise its 5 Layered Sleep System. These layers consist of:

  • TENCEL® naturally breathable outer cover. I had never really heard of TENCEL until I started researching mattresses. It is a sustainably sourced fabric made from wood that is anti-bacterial and excellent at moisture-wicking. It breathes well, is easily washable, and is hypoallergenic. The TENCEL outer cover fits snugly, feels great, and increases the overall breathability of the mattress.
  • A protective inner cover. The micro-fine inner cover is there to protect the mattress. It does its job well, and no one has probably ever appropriately thanked it for doing so. You do a great job, protective inner cover.
  • 9 cm HD visco-elastic 5 g memory foam. The first real layer of foam, the 5 g memory foam, has an open-cell structure that helps keep you cool and also helps relieve pressure on your back and joints while you sleep.
  • 5 cm Cool-Sleep airflow system. Another memory foam layer, the Cool-Sleep foam, helps to regulate temperatures even further. It does this by circulating air from the mattress, pushing heat from inside the bed out into the air. It’s excellent for hot and moist Aussie nights.
  • 9 cm High Resilience impact-resistant foundation base layer. The base of the Ergoflex is a high-impact foam meant to support everything up above it. This base helps ensure the other foam layers’ longevity and provide the firmness those with back issues need.

The Benefits of the Ergoflex 5G Memory Foam Mattress

The Ergoflex 5G Memory Foam Mattress construction provides many different benefits, leading us to choose it over many other mattresses we saw online. The top advantage is that the Ergoflex is rated one of Australia’s top mattresses for back pain—something I suffer from, especially at night.

Having asthma, the mattress being hypoallergenic and anti-microbial means fewer dust mites—and happier lungs. I also found out that you can find HD visco-elastic foams in hospitals all around Europe. If it is good enough for a hospital, it can’t be too bad for me, right?

The Ergoflex also has a high Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) rating of 13-15. This ILD rating is a fancy way of saying that it takes 13-15 pounds of pressure to cause a 10-cm piece of the foam to indent by 25%. It states how firm a memory foam mattress is, and the Ergoflex has an ILD rating comparable to some of the higher-priced TEMPUR® alternative beds.

One last thing that is nice to know is that the mattress is OKEO-TEX® 100- and CertiPur-US®-certified. That means that every material that has gone into making the Ergoflex is harmless to your health. It certainly is nice to know my mattress is free of chemical toxins leaching through my bed and into my body while I sleep.

Shopping for the Ergoflex 5G Memory Foam Mattress

One of the best things about ordering a mattress online is that you can do so from the comfort of your own home. Being able to shop from home means that:

  • You do not have to deal with pushy salespeople
  • You do not have to worry about COVID-19

If those two things are not enough to convince you that you should check out boxed mattress companies, I don’t know what else to tell you. Ergoflex has one mattress option in six different sizes. All we had to do was select “Queen” then click “Buy your mattress.”

A few upsells presented themselves, like extra mattress protectors and memory foam pillows, but we just went straight to checkout. We found an offer code to reduce the mattress price a bit and checked out with no issues at all. For those who use Zip, you can use it to get 0% financing on your new Ergoflex for six months.

Unpacking the Ergoflex 5G Memory Foam Mattress

One of the coolest parts about buying a boxed mattress, other than actually sleeping on one, is unpacking it. Machine-compressed and vacuum-sealed, it almost looks like you got scammed and the mattress company shipped you a cheap air mattress. Once you pierce that vacuum-sealed packaging, however, your fears quickly vanish.

The once-tightly-packed roll of foam quickly expands into what seemed like a full-blown bed in the matter of a minute. In reality, only about 90% of the mattress’s full size uncompressed in that minute, with the final 10% taking a few hours to finalize—but it is still impressive to watch.

Word to the wise: Make sure you have the mattress in or near its final resting place. Once it is out of the box, there is no putting it back in, and you are left having to maneuver a full-size mattress around your home.

Most boxes mattresses have an odour when first unpacked, and the Ergoflex is no exception. Knowing this ahead of time, my husband and I looked up methods to reduce the smell, which helped immensely. Even before opening the mattress, we put a bowl of water with a few splashes of vinegar in our bedroom. This vinegar solution helps deodorize the air.

Once the mattress was out of its packaging, we immediately took off the TENCEL cover and threw it in the wash. Honestly, we would have done this anyway, but the recommendation was to help remove the odours from the fabric.

We then proceeded to “pump” a few times around the mattress’s edges to help expel any air pulled in after cutting the packaging’s seal. Ridding the bed of this air means that you will not have that packaging odour filling the inside your mattress the first time you sleep on it. While there was still some residual smell lingering around the room, it was gone entirely by the next morning.

The Ergoflex 5G Memory Foam Mattress Meets My Back

You can always tell you are going to like a mattress as soon as you lie down on it. A new mattress feels 1000 times better because you replace an old, worn-out bed with something fresh and new. Once you have slept on a mattress for a month, you start to truly get a feel for how good or bad it is.

With just 30 days to see how well the mattress worked to improve our sleep, I was a bit nervous. What if we had not fully adjusted to the bed in time? Most online guides state that it takes at least a full month to adapt to a new mattress before you know how it will perform.

We knew we had a winner on our hands within the first week of sleeping on the Ergoflex. The mattress is firm yet extremely comfortable. Unlike our previous mattress, we did not just sink into our new bed. Instead, the Ergoflex gave just a bit under the areas where our bodies exerted the most pressure, almost cradling us as we lay down.

It felt outstanding on my hips, as well as my husband’s back. Not only that, but no matter how much either of us moved while we slept, that movement did not carry over and bother the other person in the bed. It is a bit more difficult to toss and turn the way the mattress conforms to your body, but this is not much of an issue since, while we do occasionally turn over, we do not move too much while we sleep.

We have had our new mattress well past the 30-day trial now, and I cannot believe how much better the both of us are sleeping. Not only that, but the Ergoflex was cheaper than the original memory foam mattress we purchased over 15 years ago. It is incredible how far memory foam technology has come.

Ergoflex Has New, Happy Customers

My husband and I are big fans of our new Ergoflex 5G Memory Foam Mattress. While it was comforting to know that we could have returned the mattress at no cost to us for a full refund within 30 days, we thankfully did not have to take advantage of Ergoflex’s return policy.

It is worth noting that some areas outside of major metro areas cannot participate in Ergoflex’s return policy. Make sure to check out the company website to ensure you are not in one of these areas if that concerns you.

As for my husband and me, we have been delighted with our purchase. It was so easy to order, unpack, and get settled into our new mattress. The Ergoflex 5G Memory Foam Mattress has made an enormous difference in how well we sleep and has done wonders for reducing the pains in both my hips and my husband’s back.

Ergoflex has earned our loyalty, though I do not see us needing a new mattress in quite some time. Knowing that the company has a history of quality and excellence through the years has us confident that we will not need to replace our mattress for at least another ten years, and hopefully longer.

Considering that we got 15 out of our previous mattress, I am sure we will get much more out of this one. The only downside of this whole purchase was figuring out how to dispose of our old mattress. Ergoflex does not take away old beds, one of the many reasons they can keep their product costs down compared to traditional, store-bought mattresses.
