Mattress Review for 2024

Updated on September 6, 2022

If you’re waking up with pain, stiffness, and fatigue in the morning, it’s time you checked your sleeping “equipment”. In fact, sleeping, like any performance activity (because that’s what sleeping is at the end of the day), requires proper gear. Just like you need to buy the right running shoes to save yourself from aching feet, you need to invest in a comfortable mattress to improve your sleep quality.

In our in-depth review, we’ll discuss a Canadian mattress retailer called Noa that focuses on the Asia Pacific market. Although the team has entered the market quite recently, they’re already quite popular among customers. Their spring mattresses score high for comfort, firmness, and support.

Best Mattresses in Australia: Noa

The Noa mattress is designed by a Canadian company whose co-founder Jeremy Kopek and the rest of the team have years of experience in the retail industry. Prior to Noa, Kopek worked for twelve years for another Canadian retailer, developing their products and helping the brand build its digital presence in the early 2000s.

Later on, Kopek changed his native environment for the Asia Pacific region where he was fascinated and inspired by the dynamic and dedication to growth and product development. He decided to start his own business and launch the Noa Home company on the Asian market. Noa sells its products (mattresses, beds, sofas, and bedding) across the Asia Pacific region, including Australia (they have a distribution centre in Melbourne). Since recently, the brand has expanded its presence on the UK market as well.

The name of the company was inspired by the co- founder’s son, Noah. It literally means “to bring peace and comfort” and represents the main philosophy of the brand. Since the launch of their original Noa mattress, the company has created two other mattresses – the Lite mattress, a more budget-friendly option, and an eco-friendly option called the Luxe. All three of these mattresses feature quality materials and sophisticated design and comfort.

Materials and Layers

The Noa Mattress

Let’s start from the classic Noa mattress design. The top cover is a hand-tufted pillow top made of TENCEL® material, soft and extra breathable. It’s OEKO-TEX certified meaning that it’s antibacterial, dust mite resistant, and hypoallergenic.

The next layer is the open-cell natural latex whose main function is to provide support, comfort, and breathability. It’s both bouncy and supportive, and moulds to your body shape to cradle all your pressure points at once.

If you need some extra cushioning, the Noa mattress features a gel-infused memory foam underneath the latex layer. The gel particles help wick away moisture so that you can wake up feeling cool and fresh the next morning. This is followed by an adaptive transition foam that minimizes partner disturbance. All foam layers are certified by REACH.

The secret to Noa’s durability and bounciness lies in its pocket springs made of thick-gauge steel and encased in highly permeable mesh material that allows for unobstructed airflow. The final layer is a 9 cm high-density foam that runs along the perimeter of the mattress to provide edge support.

To top it off, the Noa mattress has a hand-tufted side perimeter to keep its robust structure in place. All materials are low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

The Lite Mattress

The Lite mattress features almost the same materials and layers like the regular Noa mattress: a Tencel cover, gel memory foam, transition foam, high-rate pocket springs, and high-density foam. However, unlike Noa, the Lite mattress doesn’t have a layer of open-cell latex. It’s a lighter, firmer, and slightly cheaper option but one that delivers on all fronts.

The Luxe Mattress

Having a deep, comfortable, and energizing sleep shouldn’t be treated as a luxury. That’s why, if you have a higher budget limit, we encourage you to invest in the top-rating Luxe mattress.

What’s unique about this mattress is its bamboo charcoal latex layer made of natural eco-friendly latex infused with bamboo charcoal. This innovative combination does wonder at absorbing excess moisture and body heat. On top of that, the Luxe mattress incorporates micro-coils that expand and contract under your body weight to relieve pressure.

Firmness

The Noa mattress variations suit different customers in terms of their firmness level. For example, the Lite mattress has a firmer feel to it and is best for back sleepers because it can offer proper back support and maintain proper spinal alignment.

Side sleepers and sleepers who are smaller in size and weigh less can find the Lite mattress too hard and stiff. For the average sleeper, however, the Lite mattress offers comfort by supporting and hugging their sore points.

The classic Noa mattress is softer, i.e. a solid 7 on a firmness scale of 1-10, whereas Lite is more of an 8. This makes it suitable for all sleeping positions and body types. The Luxe mattress, despite its plushness and cloud-like comfort, falls somewhere in between (7-8).

Pressure Relief and Motion Isolation

The pocket springs system does more than just prevent heat from building up. It’s great for relieving pressure off from any sore points you might have, whether it’s your back, shoulders, neck, or hips that hurt.

Moreover, we know how important it is to find a mattress that offers strong motion isolation. Sleeping with a restless partner who keeps tossing and turning around in their sleep can be challenging and result in low-quality sleep for yourself as well. Luckily, the Noa mattress’s pocket springs manage to turn partner disturbance into a thing of the past.

Weight and Thickness

The Noa Mattress comes in four different sizes: Single, Super Single, King, and Queen size. Unlike some other mattress retailers, it doesn’t offer a King Single option.

Hybrid mattresses are typically heavier than all-foam mattresses because of the weight of the pocket springs, and Noa is no exception from this rule. Therefore, when unboxing the mattress, keep in mind that the regular Noa king size bed weighs 54 kg and is 28 cm thick. You’ll most likely need some extra hand at moving and rotating the bed.

Noa is a mattress in a box packaged in a cardboard box, so once you unpack and unroll the mattress, you’ll need to wait for 2-3 days for it to expand and go back to its original shape. It might take you some time to adjust to your new mattress, but this shouldn’t take more than a week. Our advice is not to make any rash judgements and give the mattress a chance to win you over.

Shipping and Trial Period

At the moment, Noa delivers its products in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the UK. It usually takes 3-4 business days to ship the mattresses.

For Australian customers, the company offers free white-glove delivery. This means that you’ll be contacted by a third-party transporter to schedule a delivery date that works for you. The available days and time slots are Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 6 pm. The transporter will call you 30 minutes before the scheduled delivery and kindly remind you. You can pay with Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal.

Once you receive your new mattress, you get the regular 100-night trial to try it out. During this time, if you feel like the mattress simply doesn’t work for you, you can contact the company and schedule a free pick up, no matter your reason for returning it.

However, Noa suggests waiting at least 30 days before you make your final verdict because of the initial break-in and adjustment period. After a month, if you still think that the Noa mattress is not the right match, you’ll receive a full refund in less than two weeks. All products customers have returned are donated to local charities or recycling organizations.

Best Suited For

The Noa mattress is one of our top picks for a number of reasons starting with its winning combination of eco-friendly and certified fabrics and mattress layers. The premium latex provides bounciness and breathability, the gel-infused memory foam absorbs the heat and cradles your pressure points, while the pocket springs minimize motion transfer for zero partner disturbance and add extra support.

Similarly, the Lite mattress shows that you can enjoy a comfortable and supportive mattress without a luxury price tag attached to it. And for those who do like to spend a little extra, the Luxe mattress will provide an unforgettable sleeping experience, fit for kings and queens.

If you’re on the fence on what mattress to choose, the Noa Home brand offers a free consultation with their experts to help you make a well-informed decision. You can ask for a live video chat or phone consultation and talk to Noa’s experts on how best to incorporate their mattresses into your home space in terms of fabrics, styles, and colours too.

Noa comes with the regular mattress in a box perks such as free delivery, a generous trial policy, and above industry average warranty.

Noa vs Sleeping Duck

The Sleeping Duck mattress is a tough competitor, having been awarded the top-rated mattress award by CHOICE three years in a row. While both mattresses feature quality materials and layers, the Sleeping Duck offers different firmness levels. It allows customers to choose between a firm, a medium-firm mattress, or a half and half mattress (every couple’s dream!). On the other hand, this customizable design costs a small fortune, so Noa is definitely a more affordable option. We must admit that choosing between the two mattresses is a tough call.

Noa vs Ecosa

If you’re a back sleeper or prefer firm mattresses in general, both Noa and Ecosa tick the firmness box. Compared to Noa, the Ecosa mattress is made of several foam comfort layers, a softer gel-infused memory foam layer and a stronger support foam. The best thing is that customers can swap them according to their preference. However, thanks to its natural latex foam, the Noa mattress cushions your body and relieves pressure better than Ecosa. This makes it perfect for side or stomach sleepers and those who prefer a somewhat sinking feeling when you lie in your bed.

Noa vs Koala

Although a lot of Aussies love the Koala mattress, it really can’t compare to the luxurious comfort and support of Noa’s mattresses. The layers of eco foam and the signature cloud-cell foam offer a decent back pain relief and breathability but the lack of latex layer and pocket springs result in lack of elasticity and durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the warranty of the Noa mattress?

The Noa mattresses have a 15-year warranty that covers deep indentations – deeper than one inch (2.54 cm) – that don’t come from normal wear and tear. These indentations and body impressions are expected and can be avoided by using proper bed frame support and taking regular care of the mattress. The warranty also applies to other visible manufacturing flaws that cause splits and cracks on the foam. The company reserves the right to decide whether you’ll receive a new mattress, a suitable replacement, or they’ll repair the one you own.

If you think the mattress is not soft or firm enough, this complaint is not eligible for the warranty. Instead, you can return the mattress if this is within the 100-night trial.

How to take care of the mattress?

Since you can’t remove the Tencel pillow top, Noa recommends using a mattress protector on top of the bed to protect the mattress from spills and dirt. You can spot clean the cover with a mild detergent without pressure and rubbing, making sure it’s completely dry before you add the sheets or protector. Moreover, every 3-6 months, rotate the mattress 180 degrees to even out overall wear.

Is the Noa mattress a good value for money?

The Noa Home company produces mattresses at a variety of price points that are more or less fixed. The price of the regular Noa mattress ranges from around $500 for a Single bed to no more than $1,000 for a King. This pricing is reasonable if you consider the sophisticated technology and high-quality materials that go into its making.
